Fred Kluit
Latch Hooking Workshops at Eden Wool Gathering 2026
Do you remember latch hooking? It was very popular in the 1970s. Although you can still buy ready-made kits (pricey!), you rarely see a ‘latch-hooker’ in action these days. That’s a shame, because latch hooking offers endless possibilities, in terms of colours, designs and sizes. And you can make it as expensive as you like. All you need is a latch hook, yarn, canvas and an idea for a design.
Fred Kluit lives in Glasserton and discovered the possibilities of latch hooking two years ago when he wanted to transform some paintings by the modern Dutch artist Karel Appel into large-format tapestries.
During the two-day Eden Wool Gathering in Whithorn, Fred is organising drop-in workshops (‘tasters’) where you can discover the possibilities of latch hooking and see some of his work. The workshops last 1 hour, are held in the museum’s workshop, and start at 11 am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm on both days. What you’ll be doing: You’ll choose your own design and transfer it onto canvas. You’ll cut yarns to size in the colours you like and practise the technique of latch hooking. If you enjoy it, you can finish your piece at home. Fred has basic materials for sale and is happy to share his knowledge with you.
Participation in the workshop costs just £5. Use of the practice materials (latch hook, yarn, canvas and measuring tool) during the workshops is included. Would you like to take part? Then sign up via fredkluit@gmail.com. Once payment has been made, a place will be reserved for you. Space is limited, so don’t hesitate!
